Food Security and GMOs

This TWiGH episode serves as a quick snapshot of the concept of Food Security.  Lack of food security or food insecurity has a cascading impact on health also huge economic costs associated with it. Lack of food security is a problem not only in the developing world but also developed countries such as US which had 17.5 million food insecure households in 2013.  The panel discussed some of the challenges to food security such as food price shocks, water crisis, land degradation, and climate change. Global population in set to rise to 9 billion in 2050 from the current 7 billion. As a result the food production needs to double. So, in the latter part of the show, the panel discusses innovations to improve food insecurity and the role of GMOs- whether they really are as bad as they are made out to be? 805 million people worldwide suffer from hunger (that is one in 9 people).
2 billion people and among them 320 million children come from food insecure households.
Cost of food insecurity in uS in 2013: 462 billion US$ in expenditure and 222 billion US$ in gross product.
